Boston Police Department Retirees Begin New Association

For some it was like going back in time, some time in the 50's, raising their right hand and taking an oath. Only this time, it wasn't Boston Police Academy, District Two, Milk Street. It was the New Boston Police Headquarters, One Schroeder Place, Boston and the men taking the oath weren't being sworn in to the police department but were being sworn in as the recently elected officers of the Retired Boston Police Officers Association. These men, twelve in number, represented over three hundred and fifty years of combined police experience.

It was Monday, July 20th, 1998, and for the first time in the history of the nation's oldest police force, the Boston Police Department was acknowledging this Association as Superintendent-in-Chief Robert Faherty swore in the elected members.

William O'Brien- President, Russell Black -Vice president, Francis Gill-Secretary, Wendall Wallace-Treasurer. There were also eight Board of Directors sworn in and assigned to work with the following areas: Patrick Brady-Area A, Dick Ronan-Area B, Edward Holland-Area C, James Riley-Area D, Joseph Barbone-Area E, Francis Fahey-Headquarters, James Ellsworth-Mobile Operations, Joseph Ensko-Training & Education.

The purpose of the Association will be to maintain the camaraderie developed over the many years of police service in Boston, as well as informing the Boston Police members reaching the retirement age, about the various options they have available to them through this Association

At present, the Retired Boston Police Officers Association has a monthly NewsLetter for members, is assisting in establishing a Police Museum, an Employment Agency and many Social Activities.

Regular meetings of the RBPOA are held on the third Monday of the month at the New Boston Police Headquarters at 7:PM. If you haven't received any information up until now, take this article to be your invitation to attend a meeting!
